The emergence of new media has done more harm done good to human social relationships. Although social media has brought about cheap means of communication, it is worth noting that social media has changed social relationships in a bad way. It more destructive than good. Social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Youtube and Instagram, have done more harm than good on family, love, political and even religious relationships. The emergence of social media platforms has destroyed families, careers, reputations as well as lives in a Zimbabwean context against an international background.

Reputations of people are ruined through information, pictures and videos that leak through social media platforms like whatsAap and facebook. Some people’s lives are totally destroyed because of such instances and their reputation get ruined for life. Hence it is problematic to people’s lives in the society. Social media has destroyed civility. Jaxanddoug (2011) notes that:

“If we spoke to each other in person the way we do online, I doubt our society could ever be sustained. If we would act like this at work, we would be fired for insubordination”

Social Media is not only changing how we communicate, but how we interact with each other in daily life. With the rise of websites such as Facebook, social networking may be on the verge of replacing traditional personal interactions for the next generation. Social networking affects our lives in many ways, including our communication, self- expression, bullying, isolations, friendships, and even our very own sense of humanity.

The emergence of social media has led to lack of respect between colleagues, parents and their children as well as the society as a whole. In the real world, it’s unlikely that anyone would ever speak as condescendingly, bullying for opinion, and with foul words to strangers they meet on the street. Yet, many think nothing of treating online people in that way. That’s a real problem in today’s world because it means that we are so self-centred, so self-contained and self- righteous that we cannot see beyond ourselves. People no longer care about what other people think or how they feel about whatever they would have posted on social media.
